Ditchling Fair 2022

Brand Identity Art Direction Illustration Community
First granted by King Edward II in 1312, the Ditchling Fair has brought the local community together for more than seven centuries. For its 2024 return, the first since the pandemic, the committee embraced the theme “Joy & Jubilation” and commissioned a bold identity to reconnect the village and capture the fair’s lively, celebratory spirit across posters, social media, wristbands, and the programme.Inspired by the fair’s playful culture of dressing up, games, and light-hearted fun, the identity uses bright primary colours and dynamic cut-out shapes reminiscent of children’s artwork. A bespoke cut-paper typeface and pictogram system formed the core of a high-spirited visual language that reflected the village’s silly side and built excitement for the fair’s return, earning enthusiastic feedback from the community.

The simple craft style of the typography and pictograms added a sense of nostalgia, and made the messaging very versatile across both print and digital.

The custom fair assets were made open source to the village, allowing anyone to use them to create what they needed for the fair. This included signage, drinks menus, stickers, and flags.
